Man shot and killed by Detroit police after they fired on officers near children’s drills

DETROIT (WXYZ) — A man was shot and killed by police in Detroit after they say he fired at officers near a park Tuesday as children played little league football.

It happened around 7:10 p.m. on the city’s east side in Balduck Park near Chandler Park Drive and Canyon Street.

Detroit police are reporting an officer-involved shooting on the east side

Officers were on routine patrol in the area when they noticed a man they knew “from a previous drug deal,” said Assistant Police Chief Charles Fitzgerald. Officers then entered his name into the state’s Law Enforcement Information Network (LEIN) and determined he had violated his probation.

The officers parked their vehicle and as they approached the man, police said he pulled a gun from his waistband and fired at an officer. The officer returned fire and the man died at the scene.

The officer believed he had been shot and was taken to the hospital, where he was found to be uninjured. The patrol car was partially damaged by the gunfire, which Fitzgerald said may be why the officer believed he had been shot.

No other injuries were reported.

The man killed had “a long criminal history,” Fitzgerald said.

“Just very, very happy. This is a terribly dangerous situation,” Fitzgerald said. “I’m just very, very grateful that no one else was hurt.”

At this time, families were at the park enjoying little league football. They have since left and police remained at the scene late Tuesday evening.

The officer who returned fire is on administrative leave while the investigation continues.
