TAMIU student reports harassment as campus police investigate safety concerns

LAREDO, Texas (KGNS) – A social media post about a man allegedly following women on the Texas A&M International University (TAMIU) campus has sparked concern in the community. University police are investigating and a student has come forward to report her experience of being harassed by the man in question.

The student, who wished to remain anonymous, described a frightening encounter. “I was just walking, ready to go to my car, and I just felt like someone had come out of nowhere,” she said. “He just said ‘Hey, you look beautiful’ right behind my neck in a creepy way. I was shocked and thought, ‘Who are you?’, you know?”

The incident occurred on what she thought was a normal Friday afternoon. She says she acted quickly, turning around and hitting the man in the neck before escaping. Although she was shaken, she managed to escape.

The situation sparked concern across campus, particularly after a now-deleted social media post alleged that the same man had been stalking women and trying to talk to them in a way that many found disturbing. Despite the online uproar, few students have reported their encounters to campus police.

TAMIU Police Chief Cordelia Perez emphasized the importance of students coming forward. “We work very closely with the information they give us,” Perez said. “If they want to remain anonymous we can do that too, but the information they give us is very, very important. This is the only way we can get to the bottom of the situation that is happening here on campus.”

A report about the incident was filed over the phone with campus police, but Perez noted that the information provided was vague. She encouraged more students to advocate for campus safety.

TAMIU maintains that the campus is a safe place, but the student involved in the incident said she now feels safer in larger crowds. “All the girls probably want to carry pepper spray with them in case they grab you,” she said. “Now I feel like I have to wear one of these because you never know. When I walk around, I just look around and see if anyone is behind me or going up the stairs or elevator.”

The university reminds students that campus police are open 24 hours a day and they can use the Safe Zone app to report suspicious activity.
