How to use inline text prediction in Pages

The new inline text prediction in Pages can be a useful tool once you know how to use it.

Pages users may have recently noticed that the app tries to predict what you want to say. Likewise, you may be wondering how to get this feature working in your Pages app.

Recent updates to Pages added inline text prediction functionality. It complements a variety of other autocorrect options that can make using Pages a little more convenient.

How to enable inline text prediction in Pages

The first step to actually using inline text prediction is to make sure it is enabled. This is actually a system-wide setting on macOS.

Inline text prediction can only be enabled at a system-wide level.

  1. Open System settings.
  2. Navigate to Keyboard Settings.
  3. Below Text input Select heading Edit
  4. Activate Show inline prediction text.

This setting enables inline text recognition in compatible apps system-wide on your Mac. Most importantly, it allows you to take advantage of inline text prediction in Pages.

How to use inline text prediction in Pages

In fact, using inline text prediction in Pages is quite easy. As you type a sentence, a completed word or phrase appears in slightly hidden text.

The text prediction always looks the same no matter what font you use.

To actually use this prediction, all you need to do is press Tab, Space or Enter. Each of these options fills in the predicted text and takes you to a location before the prediction.

If the prediction you see isn’t exactly what you’re looking for, you can just keep typing and the prediction will disappear.

Here’s how to use Pages’ other autocorrect options

In addition to this inline text prediction, Pages actually offers a whole host of useful autocorrect options. These options include:

  • Correct spelling
  • Correct capitalization
  • Automatically recognize lists
  • Automatic hyperlinks for URLs, email addresses and phone numbers
  • Automatic fraction formatting
  • Use smart quotes
  • Text replacement

Some of these features are the most basic autocorrect features, while others are a bit more advanced.

Pages has numerous autocorrect options for different uses.

For example, text replacement allows you to replace certain characters with more complex symbols that are not so easy to type. Pages offers a few replacement options by default, such as: E.g. replacing “(c)” with the correct “c” in a circle meaning copyrighted.

The actual replacements can be adjusted in the page settings.

  1. Open pages.
  2. Click in the menu bar pages.
  3. Choose Settings.
  4. In the settings window, click Autocorrect tab..
  5. Below Substitute: Click the “+” button in the heading.
  6. Fill this out Substitute Column with the text you want to enter.
  7. Fill this out With Column with the replacement text.

With Pages’ inline text prediction and many auto-correction options, Apple’s default writing app can be a very useful writing tool. And with the ability to change your autocorrect settings, you can tailor its utility to your exact needs.
