[WATCH] “Oregon Ducks touch on ‘Stomp Out Cancer’ video”

The No. 3 Oregon Ducks are showing that their program is about more than just football. In a newly released video from Oregon Football, Oregon coach Dan Lanning, his family, players and many Oregon fans discuss how cancer has impacted their lives.

The bright yellow uniforms of “Generation O” meant more. The video above details the journey of cancer survivors, current cancer patients and those who have lost loved ones to cancer…all brought together by the Oregon football team at Autzen Stadium.

The uniforms were intended to symbolize triumph and show support for those who have battled cancer. Oregon and coach Lanning want to “eradicate cancer” and raise awareness about the fight for a cure.

Coach Lanning’s wife, Sauphia, has been cancer-free for seven years after battling a bone cancer called osteosarcoma. Her last treatment took place in 2017. The idea for these “Stomp Out Cancer” uniforms came about when the Lannings moved to Oregon in 2022 after Dan was hired for the coaching job at Oregon.

“The genesis of the project was Rob Mullens and him saying, ‘You know what? The Lanning family, Dan, they’re great people. We would like to welcome her to Eugene, but we have heard the story that Sauphia is a cancer survivor. Why don’t you talk to her and see if she’s willing to do or say something,” Oregon Ducks on SI reporter Ally Osborne told Todd Van Horne.

“We didn’t know where the project would lead. It was literally after that first conversation and she realized, “Not only could this have something to do with me, but I’m going to honor the people who helped me and the heroes.” Then she started making sketches.” said Van Horne.

The primary color, yellow, was a recognition of Sauphia’s battle with osteosarcoma. The uniforms also feature a yellow ribbon that Sauphia designed herself. Other features of the uniforms include an ice cream cone (as the family would treat themselves after their cancer treatment) and a molecular structure in the background (referring to their “Red Devil” chemotherapy treatment).

When the No. 2 Ohio State Buckeyes came to Eugene, this video was a wonderful reminder of the impact the Ducks have beyond the field.

When the Ducks and Buckeyes face off on Saturday, October 12, title and College Football Playoff implications will be on the line. This is a significant matchup as it is the first showdown between top five teams in Autzen Stadium history. A win would be Oregon’s largest win ever at Autzen Stadium and fourth win ever against a top-five opponent. However, Oregon already has a lot to be proud of.
