Pima County sees record number of voter registrations ahead of election, shift toward independent voters increasing

With just over a month to go before the general election, Pima County has more active registered voters than it did in the 2020 and 2016 elections.

On Tuesday, Pima County election officials said they were still processing a large volume of last-minute registrations the day after the Oct. 7 deadline.

However, over 4,500 new registrations were received in the last week, bringing the county’s total to over 655,000 active registered voters.

Compared to the 2020 election, the number of active voters increased by over 12,000, and even over 106,000 more compared to 2016. But the party affiliation of these voters has changed.

In 2020, over 40% of Pima County voters were registered Democrats. In the four years since, that number has fallen by 3%, while the number of unaffiliated voters has increased by the same amount.

So far this year, unaffiliated voters have made up just over a third of registered voters. The number of Republicans has remained consistent since 2020 at about 27% of county voters.

The Pima County Recorder’s Office updates voter registration numbers every Monday.
