Hall of Fame offensive line coach Dante Scarnecchia was a force to be reckoned with during his illustrious career with the Patriots. Center David Andrews was one of many offensive linemen who thrived under his tutelage.

But as Andrews tells it, seeing Scarnecchia’s intense methods almost made him cross the Patriots off his list of future NFL destinations.

The Pats captain and veteran offensive lineman told The Quick Snap podcast the story of his very first impression of Scarnecchia during Georgia Pro Day in 2012, when Andrews was still a rookie with the Bulldogs – with Scarnecchia as his guest Page in the show.

Scarnecchia, he says, coached senior offensive players Cordy Glenn, selected by the Bills in the second round of the 2012 NFL Draft, and Ben Jones, a center who went to the Texans in the fourth round of the same draft.

“I want to see what it’s like, I want to see what they do,” Andrews recalled Scarnecchia saying. “So they have the Pro Day, and next thing I know, I look, and – at Georgia we have an upper field and a lower field. And Dante takes the O-linemen with him. You have already trained with him for about 30 minutes.

“You beat them on the downfield – I don’t think anyone else was watching, but you kept those Jokers going for another 30 (minutes).” As I walked into the locker room, I looked at Ben and down there he had Ben has a heart attack. I was like, man, I can’t go to New England with this guy.”

Andrews, of course, did joined the Patriots as an undrafted free agent out of Georgia in 2015 and started 11 games at center for New England that year. But Scarnecchia, who retired in 2013, did not coach Andrews as a rookie but worked as a consultant on the team.

That all changed when the Patriots fired Dave DeGuglielmo and re-hired Scarnecchia as offensive line coach in 2016, leading to a humorous encounter between the two that spring.

“The week before the offseason program started, I was at the Eagle Brook Saloon [in Norfolk]. I drank a lot of beer…closed up shop,” Andrews said.

“I’m sitting in the hot tub warming up on Monday morning… Dante comes out of the coaches’ locker room. He obviously sees me in the hot tub, doesn’t look at me, just walks by and says, “I heard you drank gallons of beer in Eagle Brook.”…I thought it was going to be a long, long tenure here. But it turned out great.”

The Patriots immediately returned to form under Scarnecchia, winning the Super Bowl in the 2016 season and claiming another title in the 2019-20 season before the coach finally retired. Andrews naturally developed into one of the team’s steadiest offensive players and a leader on offense.

Good thing he didn’t let that intimidating first impression keep him away from the Patriots.
