Man arrested in Oklahoma City for planning Election Day attack

An Afghan man was arrested in Oklahoma for allegedly planning a “terrorist attack” on Election Day, the U.S. Department of Justice said Tuesday.

The man, Nasir Ahmad Tawhedi, 27, who was living in Oklahoma City after entering the United States on a special immigrant visa in 2021, planned the attack on behalf of the Islamic State, according to the indictment.

Tawhedi and a minor co-conspirator were arrested Monday after meeting with FBI agents to purchase two AK-47 rifles and ammunition. In his post-arrest interview, Tawhedi said the attack targeted large gatherings of people where he and his co-conspirator expected to die as martyrs.

“We will continue to combat the ongoing threat that ISIS and its supporters pose to America’s national security, and we will identify, investigate and prosecute those who seek to terrorize the American people,” U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland said in an explanation.
