60-year-old man charged with fatal knife attack on Wendy’s employee

NANAKULI (HawaiiNewsNow) – Prosecutors charged a 60-year-old man Tuesday with stabbing a Wendy’s employee in Nanakuli over the weekend.

Reynaldo Cheney is charged with murder and attempted murder for allegedly stabbing 22-year-old Kashka Otto and seriously injuring another Wendy’s employee.

The incident happened just before 10 a.m. Sunday at Wendy’s in Nanakuli.

According to HPD, Cheney was moving furniture at the fast food restaurant when Otto asked him to stop.

Then a 44-year-old male colleague helped Otto escort Cheney from the restaurant as the argument escalated.

Police said Otto allegedly hit Cheney before he was stabbed.

His colleague tried to stop Cheney but was also stabbed, officials said.

Otto was taken to Queen’s Medical Center West Oahu but died from his injuries shortly after his arrival.

The 44-year-old employee was taken to Queen’s Medical Center Punchbowl in a serious condition where he was treated and released.

Cheney remains in custody with bail set at $1 million.

According to the police, the 22-year-old employee was joined by a 44-year-old work colleague who accompanied the man out of the restaurant.

“The argument continued and victim one reportedly punched the suspect, who in turn stabbed victims one and two,” Lt. Thoemmes added.

EMS treated and transported both employees to the hospital, where the 22-year-old later died from his injuries.

According to the HPD arrest log, Reynaldo Cheney was taken into custody shortly before 10 a.m. Sunday.

While Cheney does not appear to have a criminal record, records show he has been cited more than a dozen times in recent years for illegal camping and violating other park rules.

In a statement, Wendy’s parent company said:

“The safety of our customers and employees is our top priority and we are deeply shocked and saddened by this senseless and tragic incident. We are currently focused on working with law enforcement in their investigation and providing support and advisory resources to our restaurant team members.”

A murder investigation is underway.
