Wendy’s employee, 22, dies after being stabbed by a customer during an argument, police said

HONOLULU (KHNL/Gray News) – Family members in Hawaii are remembering a young man killed in a stabbing while he was working at a Wendy’s area.

Family and friends say 22-year-old Kashka Otto was the man who died over the weekend.

Honolulu police said they responded to a reported morning argument between a customer and an employee at Wendy’s on Sunday.

According to police, the customer, later identified as 60-year-old Reynaldo Cheney, was moving furniture in the restaurant when two employees asked him to stop.

Cheney was then escorted out of the restaurant by the workers, including Otto.

However, Cheney reportedly called Otto a derogatory name and an argument broke out that spilled into the parking lot.

Police said the 22-year-old then hit Cheney and Cheney stabbed the worker in return.

Otto and his colleague were transported to the hospital, but the 22-year-old did not survive.

This week there is now a growing memorial to Otto in front of the Wendy’s restaurant.

The 22-year-old was a graduate of Waianae High School and an avid volleyball player.

“He was a big guy, but he had a sensitive soul,” volleyball team member Kevin Wong said.

Otto’s colleagues said he was always smiling in the restaurant and friendly to everyone.

“He was always smiling when he took people’s orders. He was really great. He was a great person,” said Wendy’s co-worker Sophie Tabag.

While the community mourns Otto, his alleged stabber remains in police custody.

Police said Cheney has no criminal record, but records show he has been cited for illegal camping in the area more than a dozen times in recent years.

People who know Cheney said he lived in a tent near the beach for years.

Honolulu police said the fatal stabbing remains under investigation.
