Police are investigating the shooting situation at the Ogunquit Inn and no injuries have been reported

OGUNQUIT — The tranquil atmosphere of a coastal Maine inn was shattered by gunfire early Monday morning, prompting a rapid response from local law enforcement.

At approximately 3:50 a.m., the Wells Emergency Dispatch Center received reports of shots fired at the Hideaway Inn at 67 Main Street.

Officers from the Ogunquit Police Department, along with their counterparts from Wells and York, rushed to the scene.

When they arrived, the officers met several people in front of the inn who immediately retreated into the house when they saw the officers.

Attempts were made to communicate with residents, but initial attempts were met with silence, with no response to phone calls or verbal commands.

The Southern Maine Response Team was then called to the scene to assist with the evolving situation.

Residents were advised to remain in their homes and stay away from the area for safety reasons while the investigation continued.

In a turn of events that culminated in a peaceful resolution, police negotiators eventually made contact with the people at the inn.

During a search of the premises, two handguns, a rifle and several cartridge cases were seized.

Ogunquit police reported no injuries in connection with the incident.

Chief John Lizanecz issued a statement assuring the public that there is no ongoing threat related to this incident.

However, the incident remains under active investigation.

Police are urging anyone with information about the incident to contact Detective Joseph LaBier with the Ogunquit Police Department at 207-646-9362.
