Doctors from AIIMS and other medical colleges in Delhi join Bengali doctors in protest against ‘fast till death’

NEW DELHI: In a significant show of solidarity, young doctors from AIIMS and other medical institutions in Delhi will join their colleagues at RG Kar Medical College in Kolkata for an intensified “fast until death” Protest today (October 9th).

This action marks the second month since the tragic rape and murder of a doctoral student at a medical college in West Bengal, a case that has sparked outrage and widespread calls for justice.

The arrival of the national delegation follows a nationwide hunger strike called by the Federation of Resident Doctors Association (FAIMA) in support of the ongoing unrest in West Bengal.

“After careful consideration, we have decided to stage a nationwide hunger strike in solidarity with our colleagues in West Bengal. I will personally lead a national delegation to the protest site in Kolkata tomorrow. “We will assess the situation on site and determine further measures if the state government continues to ignore the demands,” said Dr. Suvrankar Datta, President, FAIMA and Vice President, RDA AIIMS.

The delegation, comprising representatives of renowned medical institutions such as AIIMS Delhi, Maulana Azad Medical College, Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital, AIIMS Jodhpur, AIIMS Bhopal, AIIMS Kalyani and Osmania University, Hyderabad, is prepared for a sustained protest.

Dr. Datta emphasized that the doctors are committed to the cause in the long term. “We haven’t booked our return tickets yet. We are here to support the young doctors of Bengal in their legitimate demand for better working conditions, improved safety protocols and essential reforms. A sustainable solution is non-negotiable,” he explained.

Meanwhile, the protest movement has gained momentum across the country as the medical fraternity rallies behind the striking young doctors in West Bengal and demands immediate action from the state government to address the long-standing concerns of healthcare workers.
