Box office collections of Meiyazhagan and Lubber Pandhu: Karthi and Arvind Swamy starrer slow down; Harish Kalyan’s sports drama shows TERRIFIC grip

Tamil films Meiyazhagan and Lubber Pandhu are enjoying great popularity at the box office. While the Karthi and Arvind Swamy starrer slowed down a bit in the second weekend, the Harish Kalyan-starrer rural sports drama recorded another terrific weekend.

Meiyazhagan grossed Rs 31 crore in 10 days but slowed down in the second weekend

The heartwarming film directed by C. Prem Kumar in 96 opened to positive word of mouth that steers its ship towards a happy ending. The Tamil film, starring Karthi and Arvind Swamy in the lead roles, has collected around Rs 31 crore in the ten days of its release in India, of which Rs 21.5 crore came from Tamil Nadu alone.

Bankrolled by Suriya and Jyothika under 2D Entertainment, the film grossed Rs 6 crore in Andhra Pradesh (Nizam), Rs 2.25 crore in Karnataka, Rs 0.75 crore in Kerala and Rs 0.50 crore in rest of India. Although the film slowed down a bit in its second weekend, it has the potential to maintain a steady run at the lower echelons.

Showing great attitude, Lubber Pandhu earns Rs 33.10 Crore in India

On the other hand, Lubber Pandhu is still showing strong box office performance in its third weekend. The rural sports drama starring Harish Kalyan and Attakathi Dinesh in the lead roles is a relatively small film considering Meiyazhagan’s face value, yet it managed to have a better foothold in the state.

Directed by Tamizharasan Pachamuthu, Lubber Pandhu grossed a total of Rs 33.10 Crore at the Indian box office within 17 days of its release. A major chunk came from Tamil Nadu where it grossed around Rs 30.75 crore. The film has also managed to attract some viewers in Karnataka and Kerala, where it has currently grossed around Rs 2.15 crore and Rs 0.20 crore respectively.

Lubber Pandhu is likely to surpass Meiyazhagan at the global box office

Lubber Pandhu has an upper hand in the domestic markets while Meiyazhagan has done comparatively better abroad. So far, Karthi and Arvind Swamy’s film is leading the race worldwide, but Harish Kalyan’s film has a chance of surpassing it by the end of its theatrical run.

It will be interesting to see how Meiyazhagan and Lubber Pandhu fare with superstar Rajinikanth after the release of mega Dussehra release Vettaiyan. If they manage to weather the Thalaivar storm, it would be a remarkable achievement for both small budget films.
