Woman charged with murder in crash that killed Adams County deputy

A 37-year-old woman was charged last week with murder and assault in the Christmas Eve crash that killed an off-duty Adams County sheriff’s deputy, according to court records.

Kayla Carroll is charged with criminal homicide, two counts of felony assault, driving under control and using fake license plates, prosecutors with the 19th Judicial District Attorney’s Office said in a news release.

On December 24, 2023, at approximately 5:20 p.m., Adams County Off-Duty Deputy Joshua Maloy was killed when a driver crossed into oncoming traffic on County Road 49, approximately 16 miles south of Greeley, and struck his Toyota Tacoma. Maloy died at the scene of the accident.

The driver, later identified as Carroll, was taken by helicopter to a hospital with life-threatening injuries and her passengers – a 2-year-old girl and a 1-year-old boy – were also injured, sheriff’s officials said.
