Manslaughter suspect arrested in Waterloo stabbing

WATERLOO — A Mississippi man who disappeared while serving time for manslaughter man has been arrested in Waterloo where he allegedly stabbed his girlfriend as she slept early Monday.

Police arrested Ladrick Quartez Benford, 43, of Mount Olive, Mississippi, for willful injury causing serious injury. Bond was set at $50,000.

Authorities allege Benford began punching his girlfriend as she was sleeping in her Downing Avenue apartment around 3:35 a.m.

He then stabbed her multiple times in the left arm and once in the abdomen and dragged her down a flight of stairs and fled, court records state.

The woman’s sister found her and called 911.

The victim was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment, and police said her injuries aren’t life threatening.

Police seized a knife and Benford’s debit card from the bedroom.

Mississippi Department of Corrections records indicate Benford was convicted of manslaughter and aggravated assault in Mississippi for opening fire on a passing vehicle in Holmes County in May 2010. The shooting killed 27-year-old Anthony Petty and injured another person.

Benford had been sentenced to up to 35 years in prison. He was later placed on parole and absconded, according to the Mississippi Department of Corrections.
