Lawrence man receives additional child sex crime charge

TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) – A Lawrence man faces an additional charge for child sex crimes committed on March 9, 2024.

The State presented evidence on Monday, October 7, in the State’s preliminary hearing against Dennis Oneal Johnson in Shawnee County Circuit Court Case No. 24CR347.

After the hearing, the court ruled in favor of 58-year-old Dennis Oneal Johnson on all counts and allowed the state to add one more count to the lawsuit.

Shawnee County District Attorney Mike Kagay has now charged him with:

  • Count 1: Aggravated indecent liberties with a child; Indecent fondling with a child under 14 years of age and an offender over 18 years of age
  • Count 2: Aggravated human trafficking; Child due to forced labor, involuntary servitude or sexual act – victim under 14 years old, perpetrator over 18 years old
  • Count 3: Kidnapping; Escape or committing a crime
  • Count 4: Aggravated interference with parental custody
  • Point 5: Contributing to the misbehavior or deprivation of a child
  • Count 6: Possession of Drug Paraphernalia
  • Count 7: Aggravated indecent liberties with a child; Indecent fondling with a child under 14 years of age and an offender over 18 years of age
  • Count 8: Aggravated human trafficking; Child due to forced labor, involuntary servitude or sexual act – victim under 14 years old, perpetrator over 18 years old
  • Count 9: Kidnapping; Escape or committing a crime
  • Count 10: Aggravated interference with parental custody
  • Point 11: Contributing to the misbehavior or deprivation of a child
  • Count 12: Attempted Aggravated Trafficking in Persons; Hiring a child for sexual activity
  • Count 13: Kidnapping; Escape or committing a crime
  • Count 14: Aggravated interference with parental custody
  • Count 15: Distributing or possessing with intent to distribute opiates, opium, narcotics or stimulants

The jury trial in this case is scheduled to begin on February 10, 2025 and is expected to last a week.

Johnson remains incarcerated at the Shawnee County Department of Corrections Jail on a $1,000,000 bond.

The Topeka Police Department is investigating this matter. Anyone with information about these or similar crimes should immediately report it to law enforcement authorities.
