Chennai air show turns tragic with five deaths

On October 6, 2024, the Indian Air Force (IAF) held an air show at Marina Beach in Chennai, which was intended to be a grand celebration to mark the 92nd anniversary of the Air Force. What should have been an exhilarating display of flying skills turned into a devastating tragedy.

The event attracted approximately 1.5 million people, many of whom traveled from far-flung regions, and contributed to the largest gathering ever at Marina Beach. Unfortunately, inadequate planning and poor crowd control resulted in chaos that resulted in the deaths of five participants and more than 200 others requiring hospitalization due to heat-related illnesses.

The consequences of this disaster are spreading into the political arena, drawing sharp criticism from opposition parties such as the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). BJP spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla minced no words, describing the incident as a “state-sponsored murder” and blaming the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) government under Prime Minister MK Stalin directly. “His priority is the rise of dynasty and corruption,” Poonawalla said, demanding accountability and resignation from Stalin.

Meanwhile, DMK leaders have downplayed the seriousness of this incident and compared it to mishaps that occurred during temple festivals. DMK’s TKS Elangovan said, “People gathered at Marina Beach for the event and the sudden rush resulted in more people coming than expected. Such incidents are nothing new at large gatherings.”

State Health Minister Ma Subramanian confirmed that all five deaths were heat-related and sought to inform citizens about the health sector’s preparations to deal with such large crowds. This included deploying over 40 ambulances and various medical teams across the site.

Nevertheless, many participants report their struggle against the oppressive heat, in which temperatures climb to over 35 degrees Celsius and the high humidity is exacerbated. They describe being stuck for hours waiting to leave the venue, with numerous reports emerging of people collapsing and needing immediate medical attention.

Sivaranjani, whose husband died tragically, recalled how her planned family day turned into horror. His attempt to retrieve her vehicle resulted in him passing out alone on the street without immediate medical attention. Given the terrible traffic conditions, the failure to intervene in a timely manner proved fatal. “If someone had given first aid or he had been taken to the hospital in time, he would be alive now,” she despaired.

Many people expressed similar sentiments. Parents worried about their children’s safety were angry after the show ended at the lack of effective crowd control systems or adequate medical assistance. Even the general concern over the lack of public address systems left many participants disoriented.

A senior police official revealed that some measures have been taken to ensure security during the event. These included crowd control protocols that appeared effective during the show but were ineffective during the exodus. “The planning of the dispersal failed,” the official complained. “There should have been designated routes, especially for children, women and the elderly to get out safely. Instead, everyone left at once.”

While authorities tried to regulate the size of the crowd, the excitement fueled by social media advertising backfired spectacularly. Initial estimates put around 1.1 million participants, but the actual numbers overwhelmed the local infrastructure. Videos went viral showing huge lines of people waiting at nearby train stations after the show ended. Participants reported waiting for hours, leading to heat exhaustion and acute dehydration for many.

On the political front, the tragedy’s delay hit hard after many citizens expressed outrage across party lines. The opposition party AIADMK underlined its criticism of the government’s lack of preparations. Former chief minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami noted that basic needs such as water and adequate medical care were being grossly neglected and criticized the government’s inability to learn from previous events.

Actor-politician Vijay also took to social media to express his dismay, condoling with the affected families and calling for strict security checks for future gatherings, highlighting the urgent need for basic amenities at public events.

This grim matter requires serious soul-searching and a reassessment of the effective management of large gatherings. The echoes of this tragedy are a reminder of the consequences of neglecting crowd safety protocols, not only through organizational failures on the one hand, but also through the ongoing demand for systematic accountability from those in power. The haunting images of loved ones lost and lives forever changed resonate across Chennai and beyond, highlighting the need for reflective change and improved disaster preparedness.

Victims’ families express skepticism over government statements that absolve the incident of mismanagement and appear to blame extreme weather conditions. Grieving relatives argue vigorously against claims about adequate arrangements for this chaotic mass gathering, raising concerns that authorities are more focused on political posturing than on the well-being of citizens.

Finally, the state is preparing for the consequences of the tragedy with the promises of compensation for the families of the victims emphasized by Prime Minister Stalin, but only time will tell whether these incidents trigger meaningful reforms.
