Woman struck and killed in motorized wheelchair on SW 27th Avenue

A woman in a motorized wheelchair was struck and killed while trying to cross a busy street Monday evening.

Here’s what we know:

Where was the crash? Located at Southwest 34th Street and 27th Avenue in Ocala.

Who was killed? A 69-year-old Ocala woman. Her name was not immediately released.

Who was driving the vehicle? A 45-year-old Ocala woman. Her name was not immediately released.

Which authority is investigating? Ocala Police Department.

What time did the police receive the call? 7:37 p.m. They were on site at 7:41 p.m

What happened? Police officers said the 45-year-old woman was driving in the inside lane of a GMC Envoy northbound on 27th Avenue. The 69-year-old victim was apparently in the crosswalk at the 34th Street intersection.

A witness told police the driver had a green light and the vehicle struck the woman in the wheelchair. When officers arrived, the victim was on the roadway.

Medical personnel transported the woman to HCA Florida Ocala Hospital, where she later died. Officials said the driver was on her way home at the time of the accident.

Monday’s accident, which is under investigation, occurred less than a mile from another fatal pedestrian accident that occurred on October 1.

How many people have died in traffic accidents in the city? Ten so far this year. Last year, officials investigated nine. The figures do not include numbers from the Florida Highway Patrol, which covers unincorporated Marion County or the cities of Belleview and Dunnellon.
