Toddler in critical condition after shooting in Sumter

Early Monday morning, several shots were fired at a house, seriously injuring a nine-year-old.

A deputy with the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office heard the shots while on patrol around 1:42 a.m. Oct. 7 and reported it to dispatch.

According to officials, 911 calls shortly thereafter confirmed the location of the shooting.

When officers arrived at the home between West Brewington Road and Thomas Sumter Highway, they were escorted into the home by family members, where they found the injured child.

Emergency medical services (EMS) quickly transported the child to a hospital, where he remains in critical condition.

Sheriff Anthony Dennis emphasized the need to solve this crime and put an end to gun violence in the community.

He expressed concern about the increasing involvement of young people in such incidents and called on everyone to help bring those responsible to justice.
