Authors Itaru Mizuno and Zoë Tomalin

Japanese broadcaster Nippon TV and London-based producer Anyway Content have agreed a joint development partnership to create an original scripted series for the global market.

Original comedy “How to be a Sensei Twins” from Nippon TV’s creative director/screenwriter Itaru Mizuno, the multi-award-winning Asian Academy Creative director behind the 2023 breakout hit “Rebooting,” starring British comedy writer Zoë Tomalin (“Have I Got News For You, Hypothetical”).

It will be launched internationally by Nippon TV at Mipcom in Cannes later this month.

The bilingual comedy-drama is based on an original concept by Mizuno and is set in Japan and the UK. The focus is on a young British woman who realizes her dream of becoming a manga artist in Japan and one day being called Sensei.

Her quest for success in the weird and wonderful world of manga takes her through iconic and more subterranean locations in Tokyo. The one-hour episode series is in advanced development following a writing session that recently took place in Tokyo.

Sayako Aoki, Head of Global Scripted at Nippon TV, is the business producer of the series. Chairman James Baker, Head of Development Kathryn Castles and Head of Development Cassie Smyth are leading the project for Anyway Content. Aoki will be at Mipcom to discuss the project with potential financiers, clients and production partners.

Nippon TV has had several recent successes in the scripted format, from the successful launch of the scripted series “Mother and Woman – My Life for My Children” to the series “Connected”, developed in conjunction with the British company Envision Entertainment, currently produced by Tomorrow Studios for a US version was selected and Issak, another series developed jointly with ZDF Studios and Studio Zentral.
