Report says schools in Sapporo have inadequately addressed sexual assault cases

A third-grade elementary school student in Sapporo was sexually assaulted multiple times by a middle school student in 2021, an independent panel of the Sapporo Education Authority said in an investigative report on Tuesday.

Due to the magnitude of the incident, the report classified the case as a “serious incident” and legally required the school to report the case in detail to the mayor.

According to the report, the delinquent student previously attended the same elementary school as the victim and the two were members of the same youth sports team.
