Fritz and Dimitrov finally progress at the rainy Shanghai Masters

SHANGHAI (AP) — Two days after the start, seventh-seeded Taylor Fritz and 10th-seeded Grigor Dimitrov finally finish their second-round matches at the Shanghai Masters on Monday.

Fritz, the US Open finalist, was leading 4-3 in the opening set against France’s Terence Atmane when rain halted play at the Qizhong Forest Sports City Arena on Saturday, then skipped all games on the outdoor courts until Monday.

The American needed two tiebreakers to defeat 161st-ranked Atmane 7-6 (4), 7-6 (5), with only one break of serve in the two-hour match. Fritz will face Japanese qualifier Yosuke Watanuki in the third round.

Dimitrov, playing in his 100th Masters tournament, started Monday with a one-set lead but suffered a break in the second game against Zizou Bergs.

The Belgian, ranked 73rd, converted his lead and took the second set. Dimitrov responded by breaking Bergs three times as he lost one of his own service games, clinching the match 6-3, 3-6, 6-2.

The Bulgarian will face Australian Alexei Popyrin in the third round.

Holger Rune of Denmark recovered from a set down to beat Matteo Berrettini of Italy 4-6, 6-4, 6-3.

Another Italian lost. Lorenzo Musetti appeared to be heading for an easy win before collapsing as the No. 15 seed, losing to David Goffin 1-6, 7-6(6), 6-2. The Belgian will next face Marcos Giron after the American defeated Karen Khachanov 6-4, 6-3.

Flavio Cobolli beat Stan Wawrinka 6:7 (6), 7:6 (4) and 6:3, setting up a third-round match against four-time record champion Novak Djokovic.

However, the rain continued to cause devastating damage, so games on the outdoor courts were canceled for the day. Matches were postponed to Tuesday, including 10th-seeded Stefanos Tsitsipas.

Under the retractable roof, US Open semifinalist Frances Tiafoe defeated Zhou Yi of China 6-2, 6-4, and Tallon Griekspoor defeated 26th seed Jordan Thompson 6-3, 6-2.

Wuhan open

12th-ranked Beatriz Haddad-Maia defeated Madison Keys of the USA 7-6 (7), 6-2 in her opening game.

The Brazilian, who won the Seoul Open last month for her fourth career title, converted five of her eight break point chances from 12 to three from Keys.

Former US Open finalist Leylah Fernandez of Canada beat 12th seed Diana Shnaider 6-7 (7), 6-3, 6-3.

No. 10 seed Anna Kalinskaya beat Anna Bondár 6-1, 6-3 and No. 15 seed Donna Vekic beat Elise Mertens 3-6, 6-1, 6-3.

Rain in Wuhan meant that play on the outdoor courts was interrupted.

The eight top seeds, including second-seeded Aryna Sabalenka and China Open champion Coco Gauff, received a bye in the first round.
