A 41-year-old man suspected of endangering children by possessing and allegedly transporting “magic mushrooms” in Fallbrook and Bonsall was taken into custody, authorities announced Monday.

According to the San Diego County Sheriff’s Office, investigators executed a search warrant around 9 a.m. Friday at a business in the 200 block of West Ash Street in Fallbrook and at a residence in the 1600 block of West Lilac Road in Bonsall Department.

Detectives from the Fallbrook Sheriff’s Substation Crime Suppression Team, with assistance from the Sheriff’s Marijuana Enforcement Team, discovered an illegal operation at both locations involving the production and distribution of psilocybin mushrooms, also known as “magic mushrooms.”

“Psilocybin is the psychoactive ingredient in magic mushrooms and magic mushrooms and is listed as a Schedule 1 drug under the Controlled Substances Act. This means that psilocybin has a high potential for abuse and there is currently no accepted medical use in the United States. Possession and sale violate state and federal laws,” sheriff’s officials said in a statement.

Two rifles, four handguns, over 250 pounds of magic mushrooms, 40 pounds of psilocybin chocolate candies, Ecstasy, LSD and potential ketamine substances were seized from the locations.

Randal Scott Vance was arrested and charged on suspicion of child endangerment, possession, manufacture and transportation of controlled substances with intent to sell, violating public health orders and using a weapon in the commission of drug crimes.

Sheriff’s officials said the drugs had an estimated street value of more than $200,000.

Two children between the ages of 10 and 12 were taken into the care of their mother. The children’s names are being withheld due to their ages per Sheriff’s Department policy.
