Woman killed in car accident

(Seguin) – An Austin woman was killed in a vehicle accident on the State Highway 123 bypass near Seguin High School.

Lt. Mike McCann of the Seguin Police Department says the accident occurred just before 2 p.m. Saturday at the intersection of the 1300 block of East Cedar Street and the 1100 block of North Highway 123.

McCann said preliminary investigation shows a 2018 BMW was traveling south on 123 when it reportedly struck the driver’s side of a 2022 Honda Pilot that was traveling east on Cedar. Preliminary investigation also shows that the BMW had a green light when the Honda entered the intersection at a reported red light – causing the Honda to roll over and end up on its roof.

The driver of the Honda was killed. The victim is identified as Martha Cruz, 59, of Austin.

According to reports, the two occupants of the BMW and a passenger in the Honda were all treated at the scene and released by Seguin EMS.

McCann says this accident prompted Seguin police to once again warn drivers about the responsibility that comes with driving.

“Please be careful to avoid distractions when driving. Keep your focus on the roads. Don’t let your phones or radios distract you from the main purpose of driving, which is safety and getting where you want to go. Please make sure we all wear our seatbelts so we can stay safe and get home to our loved ones. Be careful when approaching intersections. The vast majority of accidents occur at intersections. So if we were to simply slow down before approaching an intersection, we would look both ways, even if we have a green light. Be on the lookout for other vehicles that may be entering the intersection and we can avoid an accident,” McCann said.

McCann says a full investigation including a reconstruction of the accident is currently ongoing.
