A man charged with murder in a fatal stabbing in New Bedford last week was ordered held without bail Monday in New Bedford District Court.

Angel Avelino, 32, of Lynn, Massachusetts, is accused in the death of 51-year-old Jesus Torres.

At his arraignment, a plea of innocence was entered on his behalf.

According to prosecutors, police responded to an area outside 1304 Acushnet Ave. just before 11:30 p.m. to a report of a stabbing last Thursday.

Authorities said in court that video surveillance footage showed an altercation and that Avelino stabbed the victim with a long-bladed knife.

The victim was taken to St. Luke’s Hospital, where the man was later pronounced dead, police said.

“When something like this is fatal, every single one of us is worried. I will not deny it because this is where we live, this is where our houses are, this is where our families are,” said resident Debora Coelho.

Prosecutors also said Avelino has six open cases in Lynn, including incidents involving assault, battery and theft. His bail was revoked in those cases.

Avelino was held without bail and a court date was set for Nov. 15.
