3 dead in medical helicopter crash near Owenton, Kentucky

Three crew members aboard a medical helicopter died after it crashed near Owenton, Kentucky. on Monday, according to the crew’s parent company.

According to a statement from Air Evac Lifeteam, one of its helicopters – Air Evac 133 – crashed in response to an emergency call around 6 p.m

Crew members were in Grant County and were en route to pick up a patient when the accident occurred.

According to a statement from the Federal Aviation Administration, the helicopter was a Bell 206.

“Our primary focus now is supporting the affected families as well as our team members,” the company said in a statement. “Critical incident stress management teams have been deployed to support our team members during this difficult time.

“This was a terribly tragic accident and our deepest condolences go out to the families and friends of the employees.”

Air Evac Lifeteam said it would not release the names of the crew members killed in the crash.

According to FlightAware.com, the helicopter took off from Williamstown at 5:22 p.m. It was last reported “near Frankfort” at 5:30 p.m

Several witnesses had dinner on the back patio of Amigo. They said the helicopter crashed into a tower, causing it to crash and catch fire.

Authorities published on the Owenton, Owen County Fire Department and Owen Co. Emergency Services Facebook page:

“We urge you to keep a safe distance from the scene of the accident. A helicopter crashed near Amigos, prompting a federal investigation, and our responsibility is to secure the site. Firefighters were deployed to prevent unauthorized entry. We kindly ask for your help in avoiding this.” A detailed update will follow at a later date.

Owen Electric Cooperative said the crash caused a power outage that lasted about an hour.

The National Transportation and Safety Board said an investigator would arrive at the scene Tuesday.

Where is Owenton, Kentucky?

It is the county seat of Owen County and is located at the intersection of US Route 127 and Kentucky Route 22, about halfway between Louisville and Cincinnati.
