Charges have been filed in an accident that killed an off-duty Colorado deputy

A woman who authorities say caused a fatal crash in Colorado killed an off-duty sheriff’s deputy was charged with vehicular manslaughter last year. Deputy Joshua Maloy was 31 years old and worked for the Adams County Sheriff’s Office. The accident occurred Dec. 24 near the intersection of County Road 49 and County Road 40 in Weld County.

Prosecutors announced Monday that charges will be filed against Kayla Carroll, 37. She was seriously injured in the accident.

After the accident, according to investigators, Carroll crossed into oncoming traffic and collided with the vehicle that Maloy was in. Carroll’s two children were in the car and both were injured, one seriously.

Carroll faces several charges in the case in addition to vehicular homicide. This includes assaults with vehicles and displaying fake or manipulated license plates.

Maloy worked for the sheriff’s office for several years and previously served in the U.S. Marine Corps.
