Election officials are trained before election day

GULFPORT, Miss. (WLOX) – With Election Day less than a month away, several election officials at the Harrison County Annex Building have been undergoing extensive training to ensure voting goes smoothly for everyone.

Becky Payne, District 2 Harrison County election commissioner, said the training is a refresher for the veterans and gives the new managers the tools they need.

“This is important because voters want to come here, get their ballot and vote and be gone. “So if they know all the tools and have all the things they need to accomplish that, it makes the day go by easier,” she explained. “Occasionally we have to stay a little longer if you have an affidavit ballot, but if you have informed them correctly then there will be no problems with that either.”

Payne said voting is important and if you can’t show up on Election Day, you can still vote by mail despite current regulations.

“But I would just encourage everyone to get out and vote,” Payne said. “Every election is important, so it’s just important that you go through with it. You know some people say, ‘Oh, if you didn’t vote, you wouldn’t have a say.’ Well, that’s not true, but you should go and vote.”

The county clerk’s office is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and until noon on the last two Saturdays before the election.

When you go to the polls, have your photo ID ready and check the validity and location of your voter registration.

Polls will open at 7 a.m. on November 5th and the line will be cut off promptly at 7 p.m
