Adams’ longtime confidante, Winnie Greco, resigns and an employee believed to be cooperating with the government is fired

Two controversial City Hall employees — including Winnie Greco, a longtime confidant of Mayor Eric Adams — were forced out of their jobs Monday, The Post has learned.

Greco – who officials believe may face government charges – resigned while aide Rana Abbasova, a key figure in the criminal case against Adams, was fired, sources said.

Two other staffers – Mohammad Bahi, the mayor’s liaison to the Muslim community, and Ahsan Chutgai, his senior Muslim adviser – have resigned in recent days, according to sources.

All four could not immediately be reached for comment. Lawyers for Abbasova and Greco did not respond to calls.

Greco’s resignation is the latest major shakeup in the Adams administration since the mayor was indicted on federal bribery and corruption charges – and Gov. Kathy Hochul issued an order that he must come clean if he leaves the job before a certain blockbuster According to sources, there will be a court case.

Greco served as the mayor’s Asian affairs director and has long been suspected of having ties to Chinese nationals.

Insiders said Greco’s departure became inevitable as members of the administration prepared for her to be indicted by the Eastern District of New York government over her foreign dealings while she served in city government and on Adams’ campaign .

Murmurs about Greco’s likely ouster became deafening Friday after insiders said Adams would force First Deputy Mayor Sheena Wright out of office.

Greco was seen speaking to Adams’ senior adviser Ingrid Lewis-Martin at City Hall. When approached by The Post, Greco quickly walked away and repeated “no comment” when asked about her possible resignation, the long-rumored charges against her and the federal raid on her home earlier this year.

Federal agents also raided Abbasova’s home in November – the same day they raided the homes of Brianna Suggs and Cenk Ocal, the Turkish airline captain who had arranged travel for Adams via Abbasova.

Abbasova was identified as a key witness in the federal case against Adams, which details $123,000 in travel benefits he allegedly received from Turkish officials and nationals.

She had worked as Adams’ liaison in Turkey during his time as Brooklyn borough president – a role that landed her in the eyes of FBI agents as they investigated the mayor.

The 57-page indictment against Adams mentions Abbasova several times and accuses her of coordinating “many of the illegal campaign contributions and improper personal travel benefits” that Adams allegedly received from Turkey.

The indictment alleges she also went to the bathroom and deleted text messages during a meeting with FBI agents.

Abbasova was the mayor’s director of protocols in the Office of International Affairs until she was placed on leave by the administration for asking staffers to delete messages.

Like Abbasova, Adams and Greco have a long history, dating back to his time as Brooklyn borough president, when she served as a volunteer fundraiser and liaison for the Chinese community.

In addition to being the first federal indictment against a sitting Big Apple mayor, the indictment against Adams came amid growing federal investigations into top City Hall officials, including Greco and Abbasova.

In February, authorities searched Greco’s home in the Bronx after she was investigated by the city’s Bureau of Investigation over allegations that she abused her position at City Hall to receive benefits.

She reportedly promised a campaign aide a job in Adams’ administration if he would help renovate her kitchen in early 2022.

Greco, who makes $100,000 a year, took a leave of absence from City Hall but returned months later.

Her return apparently sparked a dispute with at least one high-ranking City Hall official: now-former chief attorney Lisa Zornberg.

Sources said she pushed Adams to oust Greco, arguing she couldn’t represent her ethically after she lied on financial disclosure forms.

Adams ignored Zornberg’s advice and the top lawyer suddenly resigned.

Greco also played a role in the prosecution of Adams. According to the indictment, she traveled with Adams on two cross-continental trips in 2017.

During the first, in July and August 2017, Greco accompanied Adams and the then-borough president’s son on an enviable jet-setting excursion from Nice, France; Istanbul, Türkiye; Columbia, Sri Lanka; and Beijing, China, according to court documents.

“Adams accepted free Turkish airline business class tickets for himself and his companions totaling more than $35,000,” the indictment says.

During their stay in Istanbul, the trio received a heavily discounted stay at the St. Regis Istanbul, where the future mayor stayed in the luxurious “Bentley Suite,” the indictment says.

According to the documents, Greco also flew with Adams to Nepal via Istanbul and Beijing in October 2017. The couple’s free business class tickets for the trip had a total value of more than $16,000, according to the indictment.

Her resignation came on the heels of Monday’s resignation of Deputy Mayor for Public Safety Phil Banks, another Adams staffer who was under federal fire.
