Arrest came two years after stabbing in downtown Kelowna-Okanagan

As Devon Foster’s family prepares for the two-year anniversary of Devon Foster’s death, an arrest has finally been made in the case.

“I was hoping for some closure and some relief, but I didn’t get any of that because now it’s just starting… the clock is starting to restart for another lengthy process,” said Foster’s mother, Reta Guild.

Kelowna RCMP confirmed over the weekend that they had arrested Tyler Sutter in connection with Foster’s death.

The 43-year-old is charged with second-degree murder.

“It takes us back to the first day, like all the stitches that were put in to heal the wound were ripped out again,” said Foster’s mother, Reta Guild.

On October 9, 2022, police were called to an altercation in the downtown area.

When they arrived, they found Foster, 32, bleeding after being stabbed outside the Cactus Club restaurant.

Despite life-saving efforts by emergency responders on scene, the Shuswap man died a short time later.

Foster’s family has long hoped for news of an arrest.

“It’s frustrating that it’s taken this long and frustrating that it’s going to continue to take,” Guild said.

In a press release, police said such investigations can be lengthy.

“These types of investigations are complex and must be conducted methodically and thoroughly to protect the integrity of the investigation,” said Kelowna RCMP Sgt. Laura Pollock. The investigation is currently with the British Columbia Crown Prosecution Service. Therefore, the RCMP will not be releasing any further details.”

Foster left behind a wife and a daughter, who celebrated her second birthday just days after the murder.

“This person robbed this child of blowing out candles with her dad, Christmas and a lifetime of memories,” Guild said

Foster had become estranged from his family following his parents’ divorce, which made the grieving process even more complex.

“The proverbial olive branches were sent before his death,” Guild said. “So there was hope that this reconciliation would happen, and that was just a big wish for me, and then when he was killed, that hope was taken away from all of us.”
