The Guardians placed the reserve player on the injured list ahead of ALDS Game 2

Freeman was in the squad on matchday one, starting in midfield for the first time in his career after coming through Cleveland’s development system as a midfielder. He started 82 games at center, five at shortstop, one at third and two at second. Freeman batted .209 with seven home runs and 32 RBI in 383 plate appearances.

Vogt said Freeman will remain with the club for the duration of the postseason.

“We just feel so much for Free,” Vogt said. “It’s been a tough few weeks for him and he’s been through a lot. He was a big part of our team’s success and was a big part of what we created all year. He will stay with us, but we had to change the squad.”

Martinez was originally left off the postseason roster by the Guardians before the series opener on Saturday. Freeman, who was inactive at the end of the regular season, spent most of September at Triple-A Columbus and led the Clippers deep into the International League playoffs, where he batted .417 with a 1.167 OPS in 24 at-bats last month of the season.

The 22-year-old Martinez returned to Cleveland’s roster on September 14 and batted .273 with a double and two RBI in 44 plate appearances.

Vogt said Martinez has remained with the club since the end of the regular season and is ready to step in if needed.

“He worked hard in every meeting he prepared and we all saw what Angel could bring to our team,” Vogt said. “While we care very, very deeply about Free, we are very excited that Angel will be active.”
