Reno man arrested after allegedly firing a gun into the woods during an argument

SIERRA COUNTY, Calif. (KOLO) – A Reno man was arrested in Sierra County after police said he fired a gun into the woods during an argument.

At approximately 11:00 p.m. Saturday evening, the Sierra County Sheriff’s Office received multiple 911 calls from the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office originating from a scattered campsite near the Dog Valley area in eastern Sierra County.

WCSO dispatchers told SCSO they could hear a woman during the call telling someone else, “You don’t have to shoot your gun to get their attention.” It came in 10 minutes later, at 11:09 p.m another emergency call from the same number. According to police, there was a woman on the other line who sounded distraught and suggested someone was pointing a gun at her.

WCSO and SCSO officers arrived at the campsite and located 33-year-old James Woods of Reno, who was subsequently arrested. An investigation revealed that Woods and the caller had children together.

According to police, after arriving at the campground, Woods began drinking alcohol, which led to an argument between him and the caller. It is said that sometime that night, Woods, in a rage, grabbed his pistol and fired it into the woods.

Woods was arrested and booked into the Nevada County Jail on charges of negligent discharge of a firearm, assault with a deadly weapon and child endangerment, all felonies.
