AUBURN, Maine (WMTW) – One of two Maine men seriously injured in a crash on Route 4 in Auburn late Monday morning remains in critical condition hours after the crash, according to police.

According to Auburn police, the accident occurred just after 10:25 a.m. on the stretch of Turner Road between East Waterman Road and the Turner city limits.

Investigators said a 2007 Chevrolet pickup truck traveling north on Route 4 hydroplaned and crossed the center line and into the path of oncoming traffic. The truck then collided with a 2022 Toyota Sport Utility Vehicle that was traveling southbound.

The driver of the pickup, 36-year-old Albert Deschaine from Peru, was thrown from his truck by the impact. According to police, Deschaine was taken to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston where he is being treated for serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

Police said the driver of the SUV, 78-year-old James Halliday of Auburn, was in critical condition. Halliday was initially transported to CMMC but has since been transferred to Maine Medical Center in Portland.

The section of Route 4 near the Auburn-Turner line was closed for several hours Monday morning.

Police said that while speed and road conditions appear to be a factor, the crash remains under investigation.

According to authorities, no charges have been filed at this time in connection with the crash.
