The Santa Cruz County Sheriff’s Office said Monday it is working to identify the suspects in the early Friday morning shooting that left two 21-year-old Watsonville residents, Jeremiah Rios Aguilar and Giovanni Aburto Lopez, dead.

A shooting in Watsonville that left two men dead was described Monday by the Santa Cruz County Sheriff’s Office as a “targeted attack.”

Officers said they were working to identify the suspects in the shooting, which occurred just before 1 a.m. Friday in a quiet agricultural area in the 700 block of Carlton Road outside Watsonville.

On Monday, the sheriff’s office identified the two victims of the fatal shooting as Watsonville residents Jeremiah Rios Aguilar and Giovanni Aburto Lopez. Both were 21 years old.

Deputies said Aguilar and Lopez were suffering from gunshot wounds when police arrived on the scene early Friday morning in an area surrounded by farms with few homes nearby. Both were pronounced dead at the scene of the accident after “life-saving measures.”

Carlton Road was closed for most of the day on Friday, police determined.

Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Ashley Keehn said Friday that officers were conducting interviews to determine a possible motive and that a forensic pathologist would conduct autopsies.
