Child had broken bone, cocaine in body – CCN

An eight-month-old child was hospitalized Friday with an infection from a surgical incision, a broken bone and cocaine in his blood

According to the report, social workers and the sheriff’s office were contacted after the child was taken from McLeod Loris to New Hanover Novant. The child underwent surgery for an abscess in the groin and a surgical drain was inserted into the incision. The drain was not properly removed at a hospital, but was allegedly removed by the child’s mother after she missed a follow-up appointment, the report said.

When the spot began to swell, the child’s mother took the child back to McLeod. A urine test showed cocaine in the baby’s system and a full-body scan showed a broken right foot.

Social workers from Columbus DSS and Novant “worked on the case for two days,” the report said.

The child was removed from his mother’s care and the case is the second case of child abuse investigated by Columbus officials and the DSS in two days. The cases are unrelated.
