Jabrill Peppers of the Patriots arrested and charged with assault, strangulation and drug possession

Jabrill Peppers, a star safety for the New England Patriots who was elected team captain this season, was arrested Saturday morning and faces charges of assault, strangulation and drug possession.

Braintree (Mass.) police responded to a call at a residence regarding an argument between two people. According to the police report, one victim was treated at the scene by emergency services. According to the report, Peppers was charged with assault, battery, assault with a dangerous weapon, strangulation and possession of a Class “B” substance, suspected to be cocaine.

Peppers pleaded not guilty Monday in Quincy District Court. His trial was continued until November 22 and he was ordered to stay out of the way of the alleged female victim.

“We are aware of an incident involving Jabrill Peppers over the weekend that police are currently investigating,” the Patriots said in a statement. “We will have no further comment at this time.”

During his press conference Monday morning, Patriots coach Jerod Mayo said he spoke with Peppers after the incident Saturday morning and then reached out to the league. It is still unclear whether Peppers will be suspended or placed on the commissioner’s exempt list.

“I’m not sure how the league and we will handle this going forward, but we should have more information in the next few days,” Mayo said.

Mayo said Peppers would not come to the team facility on Monday and that players generally had Tuesdays off. It is unclear whether Peppers will attend practice on Wednesday, but Mayo hinted that Peppers will be welcomed back to the team as they await a resolution.

“If we gather information, he can definitely be in the building,” Mayo said. “We don’t know enough to say he shouldn’t be in the building.”

On Saturday afternoon, the team ruled Peppers out for Sunday’s game after listing him as questionable on Friday with a shoulder injury.

The Patriots signed the Peppers to a three-year, $24 million contract extension in August.
