  • Domestic violence suspect surrenders after standoff in Atlantic City

    ATLANTIC CITY, NJ – A man accused of assaulting a woman and threatening her with a handgun turned himself in to police Sunday morning after a standoff that led to the activation of the Atlantic City Police Emergency Response Team.

    Officers responded to a home in the first block of North Raleigh Avenue at 6:55 a.m. following a report of an assault on a woman and a man she was in a relationship with. The victim, who had visible injuries, told police that the suspect, Jamal Bruce, was armed and was in the apartment with his children, according to authorities.

    Police attempted to contact 33-year-old Bruce, who refused to leave the house, leading to a standoff that lasted several hours. The emergency response team, including members of the crisis negotiation team, were on scene, police said.

    After negotiations, Bruce finally surrendered to the SWAT team members. Police confirmed his children were not injured and the victim was taken to AtlantaCare Regional Medical Center for treatment.

    According to police, Bruce faces charges of aggravated assault, terroristic threats and illegal possession of a weapon.
