October 7 attack: Pro-Palestinian protests, strikes at New York universities expected a year later

NEW YORK (WABC) – A vigil to remember the dead and missing from last year’s Hamas attack on October 7 will take place Monday evening just blocks from a pro-Palestinian march.

NYPD officers plan to keep both groups separated in what is expected to be the culmination of a tense day of protests and prayers.

Broken windows, red paint and graffiti reading “Sell Now” were discovered Monday morning at the CUNY Advanced Science Research Center on the City College of New York campus in Hamilton Heights.

At Columbia University, entry is limited to ID card holders to keep outside troublemakers away.

More strikes are expected in the afternoon, with both students and faculty from CUNY and the city’s public schools gathering in Washington Square Park to join the larger protest march north.

In the day’s largest planned pro-Palestinian action, demonstrators are expected to march through Manhattan, from Wall Street to Columbus Circle.

Blocks away in Central Park, a candle-lighting ceremony with members of the Jewish community will remember those killed with music and prayers. Politicians, hostage families and others are expected to be present.
