Detroit police are creating a new unit to help victims of violent crime and their families

DETROIT – Detroit police officers have created a unit dedicated to supporting victims of violent crimes and their families by providing information about their cases and emotional support.

The Family Advocate and Manager Liaison for Engagement (FAMLE) Unit will connect victims of violent crimes and their families with services, Detroit Police Chief James White said. The unit will consist of sworn and civilian employees of the Detroit Police Department.

“Our investigators do an outstanding job finding those responsible for crimes and providing updates to families,” White said in a statement. “It is a difficult task and to support them and our families, we are combining the resources we offer into one unit. FAMLE will refocus our efforts to engage and inform victims’ families as we work to bring them closure.”

According to a press release from DPD, the mission of the new unit is to “provide compassionate advocacy, counseling and resources to families affected by violent crime. Through these efforts, we will ensure that the voices of affected families are heard and their needs are considered throughout the investigation process.”

“FAMLE seeks to strengthen the bond between law enforcement and the community by promoting transparency, empathy and commitment to justice while providing critical emotional and informational support to families in times of crisis,” the department said.
