Driver killed in shootout with Chesterfield police

CHESTERFIELD, Va. (WWBT) – One person is dead after an officer-involved shooting in Chesterfield over the weekend.

Just before 5 a.m. Sunday, police initiated a traffic stop at Iron Bridge Road and Jessup Road – near Route 10.

At some point during the stop, a struggle broke out between the officer and the driver.

The driver managed to escape from the scene of the accident. Shortly afterwards, police reported that the two had been involved in gunfire. There was then a short chase, which resulted in a second exchange of fire.

No officers were injured in the incident; However, the driver was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident.

Police have not said why the driver was stopped.

The intersection was closed for several hours while police investigated.

A few neighbors spoke to 12 On Your Side off-camera. They said they were shocked to hear of an officer-involved shooting in the area.

They also say they have always felt safe in the area and have never seen anything like it.

Police have not released the name of the officer involved in the incident.

An update is expected to appear on Monday.
