Suspect fatally shot after stabbing California police officer at station

A police officer shot and killed a man who had stabbed him outside the Santa Monica Police Department on Saturday evening, authorities said.

The officer was standing outside the station talking to a resident around 5:21 p.m. when a third person, described as a man in his 30s, confronted the officer. Police said the officer asked the man to wait his turn before he pulled out a knife and began stabbing and slashing the officer, Santa Monica police said in a news release.

The man with the knife pursued the injured, retreating officer, who shot him, police said. The man died at the scene of the accident.
