Double Whammy for Viral Sexual Assault Victims – Society

The recent case of sexual assault of a 17-year-old student by her 57-year-old teacher in Gorontalo, Sulawesi has shed light on how easily victims can fall into a double trap in today’s digital age, making it even worse for them to to recover from trauma and pain.

Authorities have moved to remove the videos, which clearly show the Islamic high school student’s face. However, the victim’s mental health suffered significant damage, resulting in her not attending school since the case went viral last month.

An officer of the Indonesian Child Protection Commission (KPAI), Aris Adi Leksono, said the victim needed time to recover psychologically after a series of shocking incidents and his institution would ensure the victim continued to receive her right to education.

“The KPAI is available to monitor the case so that the victim receives the justice she deserves,” Aris said The Jakarta Post last week. “The KPAI is also coordinating with her family to provide legal advice and with the school to ensure she can continue her education, even if remotely.”

He continued that the fact that the student was both a victim of sexual assault and cyberbullying would complicate the recovery process.

“It is almost impossible to remove a digital footprint. [The video] will always be there, creating its own trauma for the victim that may linger long after the case is resolved in court,” Aris said.
