Man hospitalized after officer-involved shooting in Stonington

STONINGTON, Maine (WABI) – Maine State Police are investigating after an officer shot and killed a man who allegedly pulled out his firearm on Saturday.

Officials say a woman called 9-1-1 and said her son, 35-year-old Erik-Thor Himpler, was burning down their home on Weed Field Road in Stonington.

When Deputy John Staley arrived, authorities said he found Himpler walking in the street and Himpler refused orders to stop.

A news release from the Hancock County Sheriff’s Department said Himpler allegedly pulled a gun from his waistband and was then shot by Deputy Stanley.

Himpler was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Deputy Stanley has been placed on administrative leave per standard protocol.
