Unions concerned about abuses are increasing in health care facilities

The number of reported attacks on health workers in Guernsey has tripled in the last four years, according to government figures.

A freedom of information request to Health & Social Care (HSC) revealed that 123 assaults were recorded across all health facilities in 2023, compared to 41 cases reported in 2019.

Unions in Guernsey say they are “concerned” that their members are being subjected to verbal and physical attacks in the workplace and are in discussions with “management to understand the reasons for this”.

HSC said in a statement: “We do not tolerate any mistreatment of our employees and will not hesitate to contact the police if necessary.”

The data included incidents in community health services, mental health services and the Princess Elizabeth Hospital.

A statement on behalf of the Prospect, Unite and Royal College of Nursing unions said there must be a “zero tolerance approach” to abuse.

It said: “No employee goes to work to be physically or verbally abused.”

“We would urge any members who have concerns to contact their union directly.”

Stephen Langford, bargaining officer for the Prospect union, said he had “supported members who have been subjected to physical assault” and was working with management to prevent such incidents in the future.

In the UK, more and more healthcare facilities are providing their staff with wearable body cameras to prevent abuse.

That measure has been rejected at this stage by Mr Langford, who said: “It’s difficult to find a one-size-fits-all solution, so we need to talk and find out what’s planned for different service areas.”
