Colorado Springs school returns to classes after fatal shooting over the weekend

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KKTV) – A football Saturday afternoon was cut short when a fight resulted in gunfire that left one man dead.

The investigation is ongoing, but Brittney Stroh, executive director of Atlas Schools, says after some review, she can confirm that no students or staff at the school were involved in the shooting.

They tell 11 News their field was used by the Pop Warner Youth Football Group, who also told 11 News they were also not involved in the shooting. Parents say this was a terrible experience for them and their children.

“I have to go ahead and figure it out. I think I’m definitely going to start counseling for these guys,” said Jennifer, who witnessed the shooting.

A day later, the school released a statement that said, in part:

“Colorado Springs Police have completed their activities near our schools and confirmed that our Atlas campuses are safe. We are ready to return to a normal school day tomorrow, Monday, October 7th.”

But some parents who have witnessed things say it makes them nervous.

“They are threatened with shootings at their school and can’t even play youth football safely,” Jennifer said. “You know, there’s a problem we need to fix.”

The school told 11 News that all staff are trained to help students deal with crises, adding that fourteen mental health professionals are available to assist both students and staff.

“You know, they’ll never forget this,” Jennifer said. “That’s not the message we need to send to our children, period.”

This is an ongoing investigation. Police are asking anyone with information to call.
