I’m optimistic that the Detroit Tigers will wrap up this series on Monday afternoon. However, I don’t want to put -130 on what I consider to be more of a coin toss game that lacks a lot of points, which is why I’m looking at the prop market instead.

My analysis

Most of the attention in Monday’s game will be focused on Tigers left-hander Tarik Skubal, and for good reason – he’s the best pitcher in baseball and will win the AL Cy Young Award.

However, I want to target Cleveland Guardians left-hander Matthew Boyd. He only threw eight times this season, but he was great.

Boyd has a 2.72 ERA and 1.13 WHIP, and his underlying metrics are equally strong. If he were to officially qualify, the southpaw would rank in the top half of the league in xERA, xBA, average exit velocity, walk rate, walk rate and hit percentage.

In particular, we will be targeting Boyd in the prop market as he is near the top of the league in both whiff and strikeout rates. His strikeout rate currently stands at 4.5, a total he has surpassed in each of his last five starts.

I expect him to continue this dominance over his former club, a lineup that ranked 24th in the league in strikeouts per game this season.

I gave Skubal his flowers earlier and would also like to support him at the prop market. Additionally, the southpaw can also accumulate high-tempo punchouts as he ranks in the 90th percentile in whiff rate and 91st percentile in strikeout rate.

If we trust both starting players to perform strongly, then a highly correlated outcome would be that this game ends in a low-scoring affair. That’s entirely possible considering both lineups rank in the bottom half of the league in goals per game, BA, OBP, SLG and OPS.
