Tragic collapse at Navratra festival claims one life and seven injured in Ludhiana | Ludhiana News

Ludhiana: A 40-year-old woman died and at least seven others were injured when the iron frame built around the stage of a pandal collapsed. A ‘Jagran’ was being organized at the pandal when the accident occurred at Baranhara village around 3 am on Sunday morning. Sources said that the frame collapsed due to a storm. The injured were taken to various hospitals. A woman was declared dead while the other victims were undergoing treatment.
The deceased was identified as Sunita Devi40, resident of Baranhara Village, Hambran Road. The injured are yet to be identified as they are admitted to different hospitals.

Sources said villagers had collected money to organize one jagran to celebrate Navratra. They are setting up the pandal and the stage in an open area where a sudden storm is believed to have caused the heavy iron framework to collapse. Sunita and the other injured people sat near the stage.
The deceased’s husband Sarvesh Kumar said, “I had gone to Jagran with my wife to celebrate Navratra. Sunita was sitting near the stage when the iron frame collapsed. It was directly underneath and it was too heavy to lift easily. People gathered to save her and rushed her to the hospital where doctors declared her dead.”
Inspector Rajinder Pal Singh, SHO, PAU police station said that the incident was captured in a video recorded by a villager who was near the spot.
The official said Jagran organizers failed to implement basic security measures. The inspector said that the husband of the deceased did not want to pursue the case further. Police teams are trying to contact the other injured people and their families to record their statements. Further measures would then be taken.
