Septic tank: Tragic suffocation incident: Man dies while cleaning toxic septic tank in Purnia | Patna News

Patna: A construction worker suffocates while four others’ lives are in danger while cleaning a building septic tank In Purnia district on Sunday. The septic tank has been unused for the last two years.
The victims were admitted to the Government Medical College Hospital in Purnia, police said.
According to police, workers were cleaning a septic tank that had been shut down for two years and where rainwater was accumulating and producing toxic gases. Upon entering the pit, the workers inhaled the noxious fumes and fell unconscious. Locals and family members rescued four workers with ropes. However, the rescue of a worker, Raja Mahaldar (28), was delayed and he succumbed toxic fumes. The incident took place at Diwanganj Kadam Toli in Mufassil police station area.
“The septic tank was located in front of the house of Mantu Mahaldar, a relative of the deceased. Four workers from the neighboring village came to clean the tank. Raja, who was familiar with the task, also came to help with the cleaning. There was difficulty in opening the fuel door but somehow they managed to open it,” he said.
The SHO added that two workers went in first and fell unconscious due to poisonous gas. When there was no movement inside, Raja entered the tank but he too was trapped inside.
“The injured have been identified as Mitthu Mandal, Bharat Mandal, Chhotu Mandal and Sunil Mandal. All of them are residents of Diwanganj,” the SHO added.
