California officer stabbed, suspect shot

SANTA MONICA, Calif. (NBC, KYMA/KECY) – A man was shot and killed after stabbing an officer outside the doors of a Santa Monica police station Saturday.

According to authorities, the officer was standing just outside the police station shortly before 5:30 p.m. when he was confronted by a man who pulled out a knife and began attacking him, seemingly unprovoked.

The man, armed with a knife, punched and stabbed the officer as he tried to flee around the corner. The officer then drew his weapon and opened fire, killing his attacker.

The officer was taken to hospital with serious stab wounds but is expected to survive.

According to Santa Monica authorities, this was the third attack on an officer in recent weeks.
