Child climbs out of wreckage and gets help after fatal accident in Cowlitz Co.

COWLITZ COUNTY Washington (KPTV) – One man died and three children were injured in a rollover accident in Cowlitz County on Sunday, according to Cowlitz 2 Fire & Rescue.

Shortly before 11 a.m., firefighters responded to the accident at the bottom of a 15-foot embankment at North Pacific Avenue and Ostrander Avenue. They said the car was about 50 feet from the roadway.

According to fire officials, one of the children in the car was able to get out and climb the embankment, where they flagged down a passing driver who called 911.

Officers working in the area heard gunshots near W Burnside Street and SW 3rd Avenue just after 2:30 a.m. Sunday.

The emergency services had to free two people from the car using hydraulic tools. A man was pronounced dead at the scene and a 9-year-old child was flown by Life Flight to a Portland hospital for “multiple injuries.” Two other children, ages 2 and 7, were taken to a Longview hospital with minor injuries.

The cause of the crash was not disclosed, and officials did not provide information about the children’s relationship to the man.
