Julianne Hough’s Candid Quotes About Her Sexuality and Coming Out as ‘Not Heterosexual’

Julianne Hough is an open book when it comes to her sexuality.

The Dancing with the stars Co-host previously revealed that she was “not heterosexual” when talking to her Women’s Health for a cover story in 2019. At the time, she was married to a former NHL player Brooks Laich. (The couple separated in 2020 after nearly three years of marriage and the divorce was finalized in June 2022.)

“I [told him]”You know I’m not straight, right?” And he said, ‘I’m sorry, right?'” Hough told the magazine. “I thought, ‘That’s not me. But I choose to be with you.’”

She added: “I think now that I’m unpacking all of this, my husband is safe and I’m not afraid to say things that I haven’t been afraid to admit or that I feel ashamed or guilty about.” I was told how I was raised.”

Know your truth

The professional dancer reflected on how people immediately insulted her shortly after she opened up about her sexuality.

“I don’t find it frustrating,” Hough said exclusively Us weekly on America’s Got Talent Live red carpet show, August 2019. “I know my truth and I know the energy behind everything I’ve said and what’s been put out there. People define or label everything in this world and everything in this world, so I’m not mad at people who do that. It is what it is!”

Hough added: “The energy behind it is: love is love. And I believe that. That’s it! It’s actually less complicated than everyone makes it. It’s just like this: love is love.”

“Grateful” for the support

Hough thanked her loved ones for their support after coming out as “not straight.”

“I feel really lucky and a lot of people who don’t have the platform or support that I have aren’t as lucky,” he said Safe haven Actress tells Extra in an interview in August 2019. “I just want to say that I am very grateful to my family, my friends and the support of all the fans that I have had. But also to pass that on to… the people who don’t have that kind of support. That would be my wish.”

Exploring sexual energy

Hough encouraged people to explore their sexual energy at a Kinrgy event in February 2020, telling attendees that she used her new training method “for my own transformation, to help me connect with my absolute truth about who I am.”

(Kinrgy is a “movement” created by Hough that includes “practices that not only strengthen our physical bodies, but also promote our mental, emotional and energetic health.”)

She continued, “It helped me see the people around me for who they really are and experience life as it should be, through love… Take this opportunity to touch yourself .” Feel yourself. Know what you deserve. Do you feel pressured yourself? This isn’t about anyone else; this is about you. Feel your body. It’s about expressing yourself, letting go and letting go. This is your sexual energy – it is intended for creation. It is not intended to be shared with third parties if you do not want it. This is for you.”

Your authentic self

While I speak exclusively to Us When Hough shared her Kinrgy method in May 2020, she explained that the program is not just about a good workout, but rather a good tool for getting in touch with your true self.

“With intentional and nurturing movement through dance, we can awaken our senses in the purest way, ultimately leading to a more authentic and true self,” she said.

Hough reflected on his coming out during a September 2024 appearance on the Jamie Kern Lima podcast.

“Coming out is one of the most vulnerable and powerful things you can do,” she told the host Jamie Kern Lima. “I think for me it’s not about being straight or gay or queer, but more about me learning what love is and loving people.”

In the same podcast appearance, Hough spoke about the freedom to love people for who they are, regardless of gender or sexuality.

“That’s the freedom of love that I began to experience in meeting people, because I was able to let down a certain level of protection rather than being so internalized,” she said. “So I started seeing people, their hearts and their beauty and their essence. I thought, ‘Wow, I love people and I don’t know if it’s a sexual attraction or this attraction, but I’m just meeting people.’ That was such a beautiful revelation.”

Your future partner

On a later episode of the Jamie Kern Lima podcast in late September 2024, Hough revealed that she could see herself settling down with a man when she’s ready.

“I feel like I’ll end up with a man,” Hough confessed, noting that she’s open to something else.

“I want to live and vibrate at the pace of my most authentic self so that that’s what attracts everyone, as opposed to me putting what I think I want and need out there and then literally forcing it,” Hough said and added that she has “a partner” and “wants to build a life with someone and start a family.”

She continued, “This is still the case, my heart is open, but I am satisfied, and this content used to scare the hell out of me.”
